La Galleria d’Arte
Moderna e Contemporanea (The Gallery of Modern and Contemporary
Art) was founded in 1991 to promote a cultural policy of development
and promotion of modern and contemporary art, in the scope of
a wider overall plan, that of realizing an ‘art quarter’
in Bergamo, made up of three institutions under the oversight
of the historic Accademia Carrara: the Pinacoteca di Arte Antica,
l’Accademia di Belli Arti and la Galleria d’Arte Moderna
e Contemporanea.
Besides making maximum use of a permanent
collection made up of 20th Century works, GAMeC organizes temporary
collective and one-artist exhibitions of international relevance
in cooperation with leading foreign museums, and is particularly
sensitive to contemporary artistic research, promoted by carrying
out specific young artists site projects, and an international
prize – the first of its kind – for young curators.
The Museum was managed directly by
the Local Authorities of Bergamo until 2000, when the administration
of the activity was taken over by a non-profit association, named
Associazione per la Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea
di Bergamo – onlus, set up by the Local Authorities of Bergamo
and TenarisDalmine, who up to today are the principal supporters
of the project.
During the course of 2003, they have been joined by, as meritorious
partners, the Banca Popolare di Bergamo and Bonaldi S.p.A.
By means of promoting contemporary
art, TenarisDalmine has consolidated its own industrial tradition
that invests in culture as a form of innovation, creativity, modernity
and research, themes in line with the philosophy of TenarisDalmine,
a company devoted to excellence and constant technological improvement.
Furthermore, TenarisDalmine finds in the Associazione per la Galleria
d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo the coexistence
of the two dimensions that characterize it: the local dimension
of a company that has its own roots deep in the Bergamasco territory
and the global dimension of an international industrial group
that operates in a worldwide market.
