Environmental workshop presentation focuses on Dopeless® technology

Tenaris highlights the technology’s benefits in Eagle Ford Shale operations.

As part of the Environmentally Friendly Drilling (EFD) Systems workshop “Managing the Eagle Ford Development”, organized by the Houston Advanced Research Center and Texas A&M University, Tenaris highlighted the environmental benefits of Dopeless® technology. Julie Mathis, Technical Sales Manager, USA, delivered a presentation about the technology to about 80 attendees on November 10.

The one-day workshop was attended by government agencies, operators, educators and landowners. Seminars were divided into three sections, including “Importance of Sustainable Energy Developments in South Texas,” “Low Impact Practices” and “Community Concerns.” Mathis’s presentation “Reducing Chemicals at Well Pads: Dopeless® Connections” was included in the section on low-impact practices.

Dopeless® technology is a multi-functional coating applied in the mill that eliminates the need to apply threading compound in the field, thereby saving costs and time while minimizing operations’ impact on the environment. “In the Eagle Ford Shale, Dopeless® technology has been proven to reduce environmental impact by reducing chemicals at the rig site as well as zero discharge make-up,” Mathis said. “This workshop was a good opportunity to share those successes with the Eagle Ford Shale community.”

The organization focuses on technologies that reduce the environmental and societal tradeoffs associated with the development of energy sources. Funded by the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) and Texas A&M University, EFD works to integrate technologies into systems that will reduce the impact of the energy industry in environmentally sensitive areas.

According to Mathis, the sponsorship benefits both Tenaris and the organization. For example, together Tenaris and EFD will be able to quantify elements of Dopeless® technology that are otherwise difficult to measure, including reduced formation damage and minimal water contamination.
