Canada’s Chrystia Freeland tours Tenaris’s AlgomaTubes, speaks to employees

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie, toured Tenaris’s seamless facility in Sault Ste. Marie, and saw the manufacturing process of the country’s only seamless pipe mill.

The elected officials also spoke with employees about the work the Federal Government has done to support the steel industry.

Minister Freeland honed in on the lifting of the U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs and the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, mentioning that Canada needs rules based trade.

“I would say to international companies that now is a great time to invest in Canada,” said Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, who toured Tenaris’s Prudential facility in Calgary in August.  During that visit, Minister Freeland reinforced the important link between Canadian manufacturing and oil and gas development.

Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie, reinforced the Federal Government’s commitment.

“I want to thank everyone from the industry, the United steelworkers to the local community, local leadership and local businesses. We had a team Canada approach,” said MP Terry Sheehan.

Sheehan returned to the AlgomaTubes after having addressed employees this July for the announcement of a $36 million investment that Tenaris will be implementing to improve its product capabilities at its AlgomaTubes and Prudential facilities.

With $16 million coming from the government’s Strategic Innovation Fund, the investment will improve Tenaris's product offer and strengthen the competitiveness of the steel sector in Canada.

“Domestic manufacturing is critical to the development of Canada’s energy sector and Tenaris is a leading partner in advancing this vision,” said Ricardo Prosperi, Tenaris President, Canada. “With our latest investments, we will expand our production capabilities and performance in Sault Ste. Marie and Calgary, and enhance the services we provide to our oil and gas customers.”

Prosperi assumed his new role as head of Tenaris’s operations in Canada last month.  His focus is on continued growth of Tenaris’s value proposition, including its service model, Rig Direct®, with mill-to-well delivery of its pipe products.

To strengthen the company’s position in the global market as the leading manufacturer, Tenaris participates in The Canadian Chamber of Commerce Resources of the Future initiative, and is an active member of The Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, the Petroleum Services Association of Canada and the Canadian Steel Producers Association.
