Tenaris held its third annual Merit Award ceremony in Batam, Indonesia, to recognize the achievements of 96 high-performing students from eight different schools in the area. During the event, that took place at SMK Kartini Batam, Tenaris announced the company will support the renovation of two local schools with a donation of IDR $518 million, approximately $35,000 USD.
“We are proud to contribute to the economic growth of Batam. Education is a fundamental driver of personal, national and global development. By investing in education, we are building a better future,” said Andrea Previtali, Tenaris Managing Director in Indonesia, during the ceremony.
The Merit Award program is one of the company’s oldest community programs. It was established in 1959 to encourage educational excellence and includes a financial grant based on academic merit and engagement.
In Indonesia, the company also awards scholarships to undergraduate students through the Roberto Rocca Education Program(link). Additionally, through Bridges of Hope, Tenaris sponsors Tony Ruttimann’s mission to build suspension bridges that link isolated communities often affected by natural disasters. So far, over 81 bridges have been built in Indonesia and three bridges are currently under construction.
Tenaris has been operating in Indonesia for over two decades, initially through a commercial and technical alliance with Seamless Pipe Indonesia Jaya (SPIJ), located in Cilegon, near Jakarta. In 2007, Tenaris opened its threading facility in Batam and, two years later, acquired control of SPIJ in order to strengthen its position in Southeast Asia.
