Wood waste from Tenaris provides training opportunities for special needs adults in Scotland

As part of its sustainability projects in the UK, Tenaris’s threading facility and service center in Aberdeen, Scotland, sends its wooden pallets, crates and broken dunnage to Wood RecyclAbility, a local organization that provides tailored training opportunities for adults with additional support needs.

Established in 1997, the organization has grown steadily over the last 25 years and now provides training to 32 people with special needs each day, repurposing the wood waste into goods. The organization is run by volunteers and has been set up to offer a safe place for physically or mentally disabled persons to help them learn skills and develop social relationships.

Wood from pallets is cleaned and reduced in size. It is then transformed into wooden products that are sold locally, such as benches, kennels, cabinets, boxes. The sales come back into the organization in order to keep it running.

“Some of these adults in the past have been known to be sitting in a care home, just looking out of a window. What they gain here is a purpose in life. This is our motivation to keep this place going, and we are thankful for companies like Tenaris, that we can count on to provide us with wood for recycling,” explains Brian Reid, manager at Wood Shop, the trading division of Wood RecyclAbility.

Tenaris started collaborating with the organization in 2010 and since then, more than 415 tons of wood have been sent.

“It has been very rewarding to visit the place and see firsthand the positive impact that Wood RecyclAbility is generating in the community, and we are proud to be able to support their mission and be part of it,” said Andrea Pirovano, Commercial Senior Director for North Sea region.
