Advancing power generation: Tenaris in dialogue with Macchi at Hydrogen Expo 2025

Tenaris is contributing to the ongoing evolution of power generation by providing steel solutions that meet growing performance and sustainability requirements. This commitment was reflected at the Hydrogen Expo 2025, held last week in Piacenza, Italy.

During the event, Paolo Tironi, Senior Sales Manager Power Generation EMEA & Asia at Tenaris, joined a panel discussion hosted by Macchi, division of Sofinter — a global leader in industrial boiler design. The discussion focused on shared priorities such as quality, innovation, and environmental performance.

“Tenaris has supported Sofinter Group for over 25 years with high-performance tubular solutions engineered to withstand highest temperatures,” said Tironi. “By working closely with our customers, we tailor each product to project-specific needs—developing customized steel chemistries and tight dimensional tolerances to ensure reliability, efficiency, and safety in critical applications.”

Giorgio Bona, General Manager at Macchi, added: “Achieving results today requires flexibility, skilled people, solid technical expertise, and the ability to adapt quickly while staying aligned. In Tenaris, we’ve found a partner that reflects these qualities.”

To support these demanding applications, Tenaris has continuously invested in its manufacturing capabilities. In 2012, it upgraded its Romanian facility with a dedicated line for power generation products, including the processing of high-alloy steels up to 12% chromium. This included a new intermediate furnace and enhancements to the hot rolling mill, enabling the production of 26-meter-long tubes. These longer tubes allow for taller HRSG modules, helping reduce space requirements, welding time, and overall costs.

For operations under extreme conditions that require materials beyond standard specifications, Tenaris offers solutions like Thor® 115 - a high-performance steel with enhanced resistance to steam oxidation. This enables power plant designers to exploit the full potentiality of newest gas and steam turbines in combined cycle power plants.

To support its customers’ environmental management, Tenaris also provides an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its carbon and alloy seamless pipes used in power generation, offering transparent data on environmental performance—recognized as among the best in the industry. This helps companies like Macchi certify the sustainability of their boilers and enhance their market competitiveness.

Both Tenaris and Macchi are looking ahead to emerging opportunities in the hydrogen sector, where Tenaris brings added value through its THera™ portfolio, which includes storage systems for refueling stations (rated up to 1000 bar), customized tube trailers for efficient hydrogen transport, and pipelines capable of safely transporting up to 100% hydrogen.
