The World Steel Association (worldsteel) recently published its “Sustainable steel - Indicators 2020 and steel applications” report which features the steel industry’s sustainability performance via data gathered for each of its eight sustainability indicators. Tenaris, along with eight other leading companies from the steel industry, were recognized for their sustainability performance based on this data.
On November 17, worldsteel published the names of nine companies within the steel industry that fully comply with eight indicators it uses to measure key aspects of the steel industry’s economic, environmental and social sustainability performance. A total of 104 steel companies representing 1.1 billion tons of crude steel production contributed data, covering nearly 60% of global crude steel production.
The eight sustainability indicators used by worldsteel cover a wide range of key issues divided into three subcategories:
- Environmental performance: CO2 emissions (tones CO2/ton crude steel cast), energy (GJ/tone crude steel cast), material efficiency (% of materials converted to products & co-products) and environmental management systems (EMS) (% of employees & contractors working in EMS-registered production facilities).
- Social performance: Lost time injury frequency rate (injuries/million hours worked) and employee training (training days/employee).
- Economic Performance: Investment in new processes and products (% of revenue) and Economic Value Distributed (% of revenue).
These indicators provide a systematic way of measuring key aspects of the companies economic, environmental and social performance on a yearly basis. The member companies of worldsteel are committed to a vision where steel is valued as a major foundation of a sustainable world. This is achieved by a financially sound industry that takes leadership in environmental, social and economic sustainability. Worldsteel also bases it assessment on seven sustainability principles that oversee the following issues: environmental protection, health & safety, social responsibility in local communities, ethical standards, stakeholder engagement, disclosure and transparency and value for stakeholders.
Based on these principles and the available data, nine steel companies were recognized by worldsteel this year as Steel Sustainability Champions for their work in 2019: ArcelorMittal, BlueScope, China Steel Corporation, JSW Steel Limited, Nippon Steel Corporation, Tata Steel Europe, Tata Steel Limited, Tenaris and Ternium. According to worldsteel, these companies not only provided data for each of the indicators and for worldsteel’s life cycle inventory (LCI) database, but also implemented programs or initiatives which have been be shortlisted for one of the 5 categories of the annual Steelie Awards, or Safety and Health recognition program. This is the third consecutive year Tenaris has been honored with this distinction “for demonstrating its commitment to sustainable development.”
