Tenaris has supplied its THera™ high-pressure hydrogen storage system for Italy’s first highway hydrogen refueling station, recently inaugurated in the Milan area as part of the SerraH2Valle project. Led by Milano Serravalle – Milano Tangenziali, part of the FNM Group, and funded by Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), this station is the first of five planned.
Set to open to the public on January 1, 2026, these five facilities will strengthen hydrogen infrastructure along the corridor connecting the port of Genoa to Northern Europe.
Hydrogen will be delivered to the site via tube trailers, offloading at 200 bar into an on-site compression plant. The gas will then be pressurized and stored in the THera™ cylinders, engineered to ensure safety, efficiency, and reliability in the management of hydrogen. The system supports refueling at 350 bar for buses and heavy-duty vehicles, and at 700 bar for passenger cars.
“Our contribution to a strategic project like SerraH2Valle confirms Tenaris’ s active role in the hydrogen value chain,” said Stefano Capponi, Sales Manager and Business Development Gas Cylinders at Tenaris. “With the THera™ storage system, we aim to support the transition to cleaner mobility by offering advanced hydrogen storage and distribution solutions.”
The SerraH2Valle project is part of a broader national strategy to develop Italy’s hydrogen infrastructure. It complements other major FNM Group initiatives such as H2iseO, a hydrogen-powered railway project in Valcamonica, located in northern Italy, where Tenaris will also provide hydrogen storage solutions.
