Tenaris has updated its Wedge™ Series 400 portfolio for shale applications with the introduction of the TenarisHydril Wedge 451™, a threaded and coupled connection designed for extreme torque and quick installation speeds in slim wells.
The Wedge 451™ connection was successfully deployed in multiple wells in the Permian Basin. Developed to meet demanding torque requirements within limited clearance, the new connection reflects Tenaris’s commitment to continuous innovation. The result of 18 months of focused engineering, Wedge 451™ delivers higher torque capacity and improved tensile efficiency compared with its predecessor, the Wedge 441® connection.
“This development shows how our Rig Direct® model enables engineering collaboration to help drive the industry forward,” said Guillermo Moreno, Tenaris President in the US. “The new connection builds on the field-proven design concepts of the Wedge Series 400™. Its thread design provides exceptional runnability, high torque capacity and reliable sealing integrity. With the Wedge 451™, Tenaris continues to strengthen its portfolio of advanced connection technologies and integrated services, supporting the efficiency, safety and performance of shale operations across North America.”
To validate its performance, the connection underwent a rigorous testing program under the Multi-Fractured Horizontal Well protocol developed by Tenaris for shale applications, including fatigue and frac cycles, liquid and gas testing, and limit-load evaluations. As part of the RunReady™ service for Rig Direct® customers, pipes were delivered ready-to-be-run, with a pre-applied running coating that simplifies onshore operations and enhances efficiency.
The first deployments, conducted between July and August 2025, confirmed the connection’s performance in long laterals. To ensure consistent quality during installation, Tenaris used its iRun Casing® digital tool for real-time monitoring. Part of the WISer™ portfolio to enhance well integrity for Rig Direct® customers, iRun Casing® tracks each step of the running operation to identify opportunities for optimization and continuous improvement.
The new connection will be officially launched at the THRIVE Energy Conference, organized by Daniel Energy Partners, taking place February 24–26, 2026, at Daikin Park in Houston, Texas.
During the conference, Tenaris will showcase its portfolio of products and services at booth # 9, highlighting Rig Direct® service model designed to enhance performance and efficiency in oil and gas operations. As part of the event program, Guillermo Moreno will discuss key trends shaping the energy market during the Capital Equipment Outlook panel on February 25 at 3:00 PM CST.
