The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has recognized Tenaris for its Communication Routines which aim to enhance safety in the workplace. Tenaris’s global initiative, focused on building a safety culture and leadership, has delivered “demonstrable improvements in safety and health awareness,” according to worldsteel.
The objective of Tenaris’s Communication Routines programme was to set up a systematic, prepared and structured face-to-face communication process to reach every employee at all levels of the organization to improve safety awareness, knowledge and behavior.
Andrew Purvis, worldsteel Director, Safety, Environment and Technology said, “The recognition programme, which has been running for more than 10 years, provides a treasure trove of proven successful material.” Six other members of worldsteel were also recognized for their safety and health programs.
The safety commendations coincide with worldsteel’s annual Steel Safety Day, generally held on April 28 but was rescheduled to October 21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As it does every year in observance, members of the association will focus on raising awareness of the top five causes of serious accidents and incidents in the steel industry.
“Throughout this year, we have concentrated our efforts on taking care of the health of our employees and their families, carrying out a COVID-19 prevention plan,” explains Tenaris’s Health & Safety Senior Director Giovanni Brembilla. “However, it is necessary to pay attention to the causes of accidents and incidents highlighted by worldsteel since they are risks that continue to be present in our operations."
In the 20/21 budget year, more than 22K safety observations have been recorded at Tenaris facilities as a means of early detection and prevention of potential incidents or accidents.
As in previous editions, worldsteel seeks to sensitize the steel industry on overall safety. This year, worldsteel is focusing on process safety - in the identification of potential hazards that could cause explosions or fires and on ways to take adequate precautions.
