Water depths ranging from 1,840 to 2,149 meters plus a target depth of more than 4,500 meters and strong ocean currents equals no room for mistakes. The drilling and completion of six gas wells in East Africa demanded a technological solution that could enable running in stands throughout the whole campaign while withstanding ultra deepwater conditions.
The TenarisHydril Wedge 623® Dopeless® connection was up for the challenge. Validated in accordance with API 5C5 CAL IV testing protocols, this premium semi-flush connection offers unrivaled running reliability and robustness, making it especially suitable to be run in stands. Using Dopeless® technology allowed for a homogeneous make-up torque and optimal process control.
The project included the use of super chrome materials for completion, which have an increased risk for galling during make and break operations. Using Dopeless® technology on 13Cr steels proved to have a positive impact on the galling resistance, reducing the risk of thread damage and enabling faster operations. In addition, the absence of dope minimized the environmental footprint of the project and reduced pipe handling at the rig site, enhancing personnel safety.
The campaign was completed with a very positive overall running performance, registering no rejects related to connections. Running in stands allowed the customer to save a total of over 200 hours, generating substantial cost savings.
