Tenaris and EPRI: collaborating to advance steels for power generation plants

For over a decade, Tenaris has partnered with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), a US-based research organization dedicated to advancing reliable, affordable and resilient energy solutions worldwide. Together, they have advanced steel manufacturing for power generation applications.

As part of this ongoing collaboration, Tenaris recently hosted Dr. John Siefert, head of EPRI’s materials research group, for a series of technical sessions and mill tours in Dalmine and Zalău, Tenaris’s steel pipes mills in Italy and Romania, where the company has a dedicated production line for power generation steels.

“Tenaris’s expertise in steelmaking, coupled with its rigorous testing capabilities and deep metallurgical knowledge, makes it a key contributor to the development of practical and reliable guidelines for steels such as Grades 91 and 92,” Dr. Siefert noted. “These grades are known for their superior creep resistance, which is essential to the durability of high-temperature components in power plants.”

“We actively exchange data and research samples with EPRI, reinforcing our position as a manufacturer with a thorough understanding of metallurgical processes. This collaboration strengthens our ability to link manufacturing parameters to final product performance and to influence the industry guidelines that often become part of our customers’ technical specifications,” said Matteo Ortolani, Technology Product Senior Manager Power Generation at Tenaris.

The technical sessions highlighted the impact of residual elements, such as sulfur, boron, aluminum and titanium, and non-metallic inclusions on steel performance. These discussions helped clarify specific production requirements at Tenaris facilities. By focusing on microstructure and tight process control, the sessions demonstrated how these factors are critical to ensuring steel quality, extending component lifespan, and improving overall reliability.

Through close collaboration with partners like EPRI, Tenaris continues to deliver steel solutions engineered to meet the evolving demands of next-generation power plants, ensuring safer, stronger and longer-lasting materials that contribute to a more sustainable energy future.
