TenarisHydril Wedge 461® changes the game for deviated wells in Colombia

TenarisHydril Wedge 461® has become the connection of choice for operators looking for extreme torque performance for their deviated wells in Colombia. Tenaris has recently released a case study that narrates its adoption process in Colombia.

Back in 2019, two customers operating in the Middle Magdalena Basin and the Llanos Basin were looking for a high torque connection for their casing sections that could withstand rotation during running and cementing. Due to local environmental regulations, wells are drilled from multi-well pads aiming at various geological targets, resulting in highly deviated trajectories.

With an extended testing program and a vast field track record, TenarisHydril Wedge 461® connection represents a further evolution of the original Wedge technology. Its impressive torque capacity is achieved thanks to the renowned robustness of the Wedge thread design combined with a pin-to-pin backup mechanism.

“TenarisHydril Wedge 461® allowed these two operators to optimize costs by reducing the weight of the string, by maximizing its mechanical properties and by enabling a faster running”, explains Constantino Espinosa, Technical Sales Regional Director in the Andean Region.

“Following its successful adoption, TenarisHydril Wedge 461® has been used in more than 58 wells in the region. Its high torque enables between 2 to 4 hours of rig time savings per well compared to strings using Buttress Connections”, adds Espinosa.
